The MSBA School Board Workshop Series is the most important set of workshops for school board members because it sets the foundation for their work. These sessions cover all aspects of school board service, including the financial training mandated by state law (Phase II).

Learning to Lead — School Board Basics: Phase I

This workshop covers the role of the school board, the role of the superintendent, the leadership team relationship, and common scenarios facing new board members.


Leadership Foundations — School Finance and Management: Phase II

This workshop includes the training school boards are required to have by state law. This session covers core topics such as the budget, school finance, local levies, policies, significant laws affecting school boards, and personnel issues.


Building a High-Performance School Board Team: Phase III

This workshop explores building a high-performing school board with a focus on leadership styles, consensus building and policy development.


Representing Your Community Through Policy and Engagement: Phase IV

This workshop focuses on community engagement, including a walk-through table-top exercise of how to set up a community engagement session in your community. The session also includes ideas and tools for communications with staff, students and constituents.
