MINNESOTA RECEPTION PLANNED DURING NSBA CONFERENCE

Are you attending NSBA’s conference in San Francisco? You and your family are invited to attend the Minnesota reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 5 at the San Francisco Marriott. Join us!

APRIL 25 WORKSHOP SHINES LIGHT ON NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND

Have questions about the No Child Left Behind Act? Concerned about reporting, interpreting and explaining data? What will “adequate yearly progress” mean for your schools? How do you explain the NCLBA to parents/guardians and the community?
A “Leave No School Behind” workshop will focus on answering these questions and more. The Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA), the Minnesota Association of School Administrators (MASA) and the Minnesota Public Relations Association (MinnSPRA) want to ensure that no Minnesota school district is left behind in understanding, implementing, or complying with the No Child Left Behind Act. (Partnership support for this workshop is being provided by the Alliance for Student Achievement.)
The workshop is 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, April 25 at the Holiday Inn Minneapolis West. It features the following:

  • Cheri Pierson Yecke will open the program with an overview of NCLB and Minnesota’s plan for implementation.
  • Kent Pekel, executive director of strategic planning & implementation for St. Paul Public Schools, will tell us how to move beyond “the list” for adequate yearly progress and remain focused on continuous improvement and student achievement.
  • National Supt. of the Year Ken Dragseth of Edina will give a lunch address on “Leadership in Changing Times.”
  • Afternoon breakout sessions are Communicating NCLB, Implementing NCLB (making data understandable and getting it into the hands of people who need it) and Standards and NCLB (Minnesota’s new standards and their application to NCLB).

  • Tuition is $60, which includes lunch. Registration is available at www.minnspra.org.

ONLINE LEARNING CENTER RATES LOWERED FOR CERTAIN COURSES

As more courses are developed for MSBA’s Online Learning Center, we have been able to lower the cost of some courses for participants. MSBA’s course, “The Board and Superintendent Team,” is now available for a $100 fee, while “Key Work of School Boards,” “To Pray or Not To Pray” and “Parliamentary Procedure” courses are available for a $90 fee.
The courses are offered as a way to obtain training right from your home computer without travel or lodging expenses of attending a traditional seminar. To register, simply go to MSBA’s Web site, www.mnmsba.org and click on the online learning center link under the MSBA Current Topics heading.

NEW PARENT ADVOCACY GROUP AIMS TO PRESERVE PUBLIC EDUCATION FUNDING

If you have active parents who want to be involved with this group, they can contact organizers online at www.sosmn.org or call 651-291-1312. Ask for Pam.
