LEARNING CENTER

The mission of MSBA's Board Development Division is to provide a continuous program of school board development, the objective of which is to improve the effectiveness of school boards in meeting their roles and responsibilities to students, parents, staff and community. The divisional staff members are Katie Klanderud (MSBA Director of Board Development) and Paula O'Loughlin (MSBA Associate Director of Board Development).

CORE TRAINING EVENTS — In order to fulfill this mission, MSBA staff plan, organize, and implement the following annual training programs:

Learning to Lead — School Board Basics: Phase I covers the role of the school board, the role of the superintendent, the leadership team relationship, and common scenarios facing new board members.

Leadership Foundations — School Finance and Management: Phase II covers topics such as budget, school finance, local levies, policies, significant laws affecting school boards, and personnel issues.

Building a High-Performance School Board Team: Phase III explores building a high-performance school board with a focus on leadership styles, consensus building and policy development.

Representing Your Community Through Policy and Engagement: Phase IV focuses on community engagement.

BOARD RECOGNITION POINTS: School board members can earn MSBA Recognition Points for attending training and advocacy events. Access a list of programs offering recognition points.


ONGOING ACTIVITIES: Division personnel serve on committees which develop cooperative sponsorship of workshops and seminars with other educational organizations. The Division, both formally and informally, on an ongoing basis, assesses membership training needs and evaluates programs. Current programs are revised to respond to the outcome of evaluations and comments of our membership.


THE PERSONAL TOUCH: Requests for materials that assist districts in developing internal in-servicing of board members are met as promptly, creatively, and completely as possible. Articles containing material which responds to expressed member concerns are recommended for publication in the Journal. The telephone remains one of the most frequent means of meeting the needs of member districts through information, advice, and recommendations for the handling of situations needing immediate attention.
